Organ²/ASLSP (As SLow aS Possible) is a musical piece composed by John Cage and is the subject of one of the longest-lasting musical performances yet undertaken. The current organ performance of the piece at St. Burchardi church in Halberstadt, Germany, began in 2001 and is scheduled to have a duration of 639 years, ending in 2640. They specially built an organ to play this song and continue to maintenance it while it plays. Each note or chord takes anywhere from 2 months to 2 years to play.

The original ancient Greek meaning of tragedy was a reversal of fortune brought about by a mistake. In order to suffer a tragedy, things have to have been going so well for you, you feel some hubris (excessive pride) which causes you to make an error which causes your reversal of fortune. Thus, in the Classical sense, a true tragedy cannot be an accident. Knowing this causes me endless consternation since common usage has turned about as far away from this meaning as it possibly can to label every sad thing that happens as a tragedy. It's sort of like the annoyance people who know the meaning of irony feel when they listen to Alanis Morissette.

That is indeed a much richer idea of tragedy. It's no wonder Greek tragedies are so full of insight into our frail condition and still resonate so well now. It's beginning to bum me out that so little these days measures up. Saying that, we're most probably only left with the highlights of hundreds of years of Greek culture.

@rabbitdan You're right, we do only have a few bits and pieces of all the wonderful stuff they wrote. For example, most tragedies were plays written in trilogies meant to be shown all in the same day at a yearly festival, but the only remaining trilogy we have intact is Aeschylus' Oresteia. The three plays about Oedipus by Sophocles that are usually presented as a trilogy were not originally written together. They are three plays from three different trilogies although they all cover the same story and are by the same playwright.

The word "nugget" has been permanently ruined for me ever since I read one of the historic BloodNinja quotes on bash.org. If you're interested, have a memory-delete function handy and are not at work, the URL to the quote is http://www.bash.org/?642195.
Some background: BloodNinja is an internet legend among those of us who remember IRC. His chat transcripts consist of cybersex sessions with girls which would gradually become strange, twisted, downright wrong, and often before they realised what was going on. The transcripts can be found all over the place (merely searching BloodNinja produced over 55,000 results). Recognition of the popular phrase "I put on my robe and wizard hat" is a guaranteed proof that someone is truly a computer/Internet/IRC geek.

The Barbed Wire Act 1893 (56 & 57 Vict. c. 32) was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
It provided that where barbed wire was placed adjoining a highway in such a manner as to which pose a danger to people or animals using the highway, then the local authority was empowered to demand its removal; if the owner of the wire failed to remove it, they could apply for a court order, and if this failed they were empowered to remove it themselves and charge any expenses to the owner.
The Act has since been repealed by various legislation, predominantly by the Highways Act 1959.Mar 16, 2010 08:26 by kellydna -
