I do it all day and people just rush through. Except the women going in and out of the ladies room are always thankful.

I held the door for people all day, and the only person who thanked me for it was my boyfriend. He thanked me all 4 times, too : )

The only time I remembered to try someone held it for me.

I've always done this. However i no longer expect thanks. A couple years back I held the door at a mall for a lady. She stopped, looked me up and down and proceeded to cuss me out for all she was worth. She accused me of holding the door as a way to lord it over her and to show that I believed I was better than her and stronger because I was a man. I was so mad i let the door shut in her face and walked off. The people inside saw it and clapped. Then she stepped in and they all booed her.

I tried to do this , however every place I went had the auto doors... I stepped on the pad for one lady and she smile and said "Their automatic hun, you don't get chivalry points for that that" ... to which I replied then I guess it IS dead then, and walked away ... *shrugs* Mission Complete

I only got to hold the door twice today. The 1st was for a weird guy who works in my building. He refused to go through the doorway while I was holding the door. He just stood there and looked at me weird. The 2nd time was for a woman on the phone and she did not say thank you. Oh well.

I had thought of greeting the Yankees fans at the Twins game tonight by saying "Welcome to the Metrodome" and seeing what response I got from those tough New Yorkers. But I came down with a cold or allergies yesterday and was feeling pretty crappy and not outgoing. So instead I got my own polite on and did things like letting people with walkers and wheelchairs go in front of me on our narrow, choked concourses (very well received), as well as letting people in in front of me during my periodic forays from my seat down the 24 rows to get out to said concourse. Most of those people also said "thank you."
Maybe I will try doors tomorrow in the downtown workday environment.Oct 11, 2009 13:31 by kellydna -

I held the back door open for my
dogs. Many times. I got lots of thankyou kisses, outbound and inbound. Does that count?Oct 11, 2009 09:17 by passepartout -

This was easy - I left a wedding at 1am last night and held open the door. Ten out of ten said thank you! Then again, everyone was pretty well lubricated and feeling friendly.

I held the door open to my apartment for myself 10 times in a row. I thanked myself profusely every time. I also received several handshakes.

Ha! "Profusely" nonetheless. How do you give yourself a handshake? Need two right/left hands.

I work in an office complex. I am always darting between buildings, holding elevator doors open and so on. But not today. I'm staying home and rushing to close the garden down before our snowfall tomorrow. :-(

I'll try but the likelihood of getting a full 10 is pretty low. Unless you count my cat and he NEVER thanks me for anything!

I always say please and thank you to my cats, but all I get is a vague swish of the tail in return.

I can hold the bird cage door open 10x but the keets don't speak, and since I'm staying home today, this mission is a bust for me.

Ok - so I went to Starbucks thinking I can open the door for 10 people easily. Bought a coffee and cookie, and stood by the door opening it. First person ("thankyou"), second person ("just stared at me suspiciously"), third person: a Starbucks employee kindly telling me to stop opening the door for people and please go away!

I've added a new feature for /new_missions. In your new mission comments add +weekend or +weekday to "prefer" that mission on either the weekend or weekday. In the case of two missions scoring equally, the weekend/weekday preference will be taken into account the the mission selection.
Right...now to go out and find a big door in a crowded area to open...

@soarkaios: "How's the forums coming along"
Not as well as the iphone app ;-)I was planning to spend last week working on the forums but was taken out with Swine Flu! Anyhow, over the next coupe of days the site will migrate to a brand new version of the codebase which will reduce the bandwidth requirements for users looking at the site on low bandwidth connections & mobile, provide some functionality required for the iphone app and some hooks required for the forums.
As soon as that is launched and tested, I'll get back to work on the forums.

credit for the idea goes to either @merendis or @passepartout from an email of suggestions they sent me i think. Still working out how to handle duplicate missions (they are great for newcomers and its fun to repeat the best missions occasionally, so I just want to find a way of making sure they don't repeat too soon / too often).

Here's a way to grow your site: how about missions that have a duration of weeks (or longer)to complete in addition to the just-in-a-day ones. I think it would be exciting to subscribe to a mission that may take extra effort and planning, like, say 'go canoeing,' 'open the map, throw a dart and visit the place it landed' or 'climb something really high...'
People could sign up. Friends -- followers could offer encouragement as they track their progress. Many of the posters live in interesting places, perhaps they can visit each other. Longer missions require planning, time and money.
