Take a picture of something someone gave you that is of great value to you, but others would see as worthless.

OMG my little brother made me plenty as well. Every year when I break out the Christmas decos I find the one that says... (Have a Hole Jole Cesmas) I think he was five when he did it. Love it!

My now-husband jumped the gun with his proposal - he had already picked out a gorgeous sapphire ring for me, but he hadn't yet picked it up. After a particularly fun day together, he spontaneously dropped to his knee and popped the question. I said yes, of course. And then he rummaged through a box of random trinkets to find me a temporary ring to wear. This wolf is what he came up with. I love it - and I had it with me when we were married 5 months ago!

My ex won this or me at the carnival place in downtown Seattle. It's not the fact that he won it that is special. It's the fact that it was given to me the day I found out I did not have cancer after 3 months of believing I did that makes it special. I keep it around to remind me that life is short and you never know what will or won't happen.

I collect stuffed monkeys. I used to have a lot more but my dog ate several of them. This one is kept far away from the dog since it's so special.

When I was 17 I hitchhiked to PA (I lived on Cape Cod) alone, I was wild. I got a ride from a Polish trucker. This story is really long, but the trucker gave me a pack of cigs and this lighter. The adventure was insane and life-changing. I keep the lighter as a reminder that I almost died once (the second half of the story). People try to use it, it's been dead for years, and they try to toss it in the trash, then I look crazy trying to explain why it is on the shelf with my photos and other personal trinkets.

That's pretty cool :)
In Poland, hitchhiking's still pretty common. Before the wall fell, drivers were acually encouraged to pick up hitchhikers, and hitchhikers had stamps that they would give to drivers, which the drivers then collected in little booklets which, once filled, could be redeemed for hard-to-access valuables such as washing machines.Oct 17, 2009 04:58 by merendis. -

@merendis: that's really neat. That guy was really nice, he didn't speak English well so we just sat in silence most of the ride. I wish US was more open to that sort of thing. I picked up hitchhikers this weekend in Vermont going to Montreal. They were nice kids and the girl was French.

I arrived in Warsaw for the first time, and was given this three-day bus pass. Those three days have been the happiest in a long time (and I suspect will not be topped for at least another few weeks), and thus I submit it for your delectation. The value (printed as 2.80PLN) is about $0.99 / £0.61 before it was validated.

I usually keep all sorts of stuff from my trips, I have a few boxes from travels that contains everything I got there, things like tickets, leaflets, whatever. I'm just a sentimental sap I guess 8DOct 17, 2009 05:35 by mithredat. -

I guess it can be seen as incremental deletion of emotions... probably much healthier than keeping them all in a shoebox under your nightstand. One day you'll be flipping through the photos and think "ha! oh that!" and it will be completely fine. Besides, completely ridding yourself of anything you have an emotional attachment to seems even less healthy- like denying the past or our right to feel anything for it.
