It's a fun coincidence that I both live AND work on South 5th Street.
For those of you keeping score: "Blue signs are posted on arterial streets with heavy traffic. Green signs are posted on streets that run North and South, brown signs are posted on streets that run East and West." Get the full dope on how Minneapolis streets are named, including our alphabetical and presidential streets: http://www.tholt.com/street.html

@merendis: Bright and cheery? Me? Gosh, thanks! I must point out that the weather in these two photos is rainy and dreary (and unseasonably cool). We've seen the sun for a total of about one hour in the last couple of weeks. But I guess it's true that I am generally optimistic and self-confident on one level.

@kellydna: I know! You two had better grab a drink- doesn't he have quite a long layover? Regardless, at some point (hopefully next summer, but we shall see) I want to realise my dream of spending a long time in a canoe with a tent in the boundary waters at Voyageur National Park, and I've somehow convinced @a_noob to come along. Between your posts and my raves, he's become quite interested in seeing a state fair. So I (and he) think it'd be nice to visit you and see the fair and introduce a gaping englishman to fried candybars and beer. Asking you is really only a formality, we've completely made up our minds ;)

@kellydna: it reminds me more of a David Lynch movie where the protagonist is just about to get out of the car and meet a strange woman who may or may not be his sister. And the strange woman says "Your hands are the bearers of ornery dresses. Go back, before your memories become jackals." And then the protagonist looks up and realises...
actually, enough. Enough. This is part of what the photo evokes for me @jenaissance. But I really wouldn't read too much into that ;)Oct 29, 2009 12:29 by rabbitdan.

Bobrowiecka is a good name for a street. Well it sounds it in English. Does wiecka mean street? What does Sielce mean?
Oct 29, 2009 05:56 by rabbitdan. -
This comment has been flagged by users. Click to view.
@rabbitdan: nope, Bobrowiecka (pronounced bo-bro-vee-*ets*-ka) doesn't mean anything as far as I'm aware. That Ul. in front stands fro Ulica which means street, however.
Sielce, was a tragic discovery for me... I guess I never looked at my street sign before this, but all street signs in Warsaw have the district on the little red band at the bottom. I thought I lived in Mokotów. There is sufficient Mokotów graffiti around to support my mistaken belief. But I guess my street sign doesn't lie...Oct 29, 2009 06:06 by merendis. -

This is the road where I've been staying for the past two weeks. Garrigue is a kind of countryside with particular things growing in it. Lavender and things like that. Apparently it smells nice in summer. This street used to be garrigue. Now it's a street full of new build houses. This strikes me as very odd. It's a bit like a less extreme version of calling downtown Broadway 'Outstanding Natural Beauty Terrace'. Name a place after the thing that no longer exists because you've destroyed it. An apt illustration of the growth of our species.

This happens a lot in suburbs aux Etas-Unis. Meanwhile the places with actual Meadows, Oaks etc. are typically called things like "Rural Route 5" or "NW 74th St". It's a way of reconnecting with what you've lost in choosing a slightly more comfortable existence.

@coco-tidan has asked me to point out that this street is in a village of about 300 people and not in the middle of a huge urban sprawl. It is in fact right next to real garrigue.
