My son and I moved in with my dad recently. He had a spare room which he used as an office. I packed up all of his wall hangings (picture frames, award plaques, etc) and then it came time to take down this giant poster of an Aztec warrior. When I was going to take it down, my 7 yr old son said "No mommy! please don't!" I asked him why he didn't want me to take the poster down and he said "It's a picture of God, I like it." Where he got the idea that it's a picture of God I have no idea. I told him that it wasn't a picture of God and he said he still wanted to keep it up. So now I have this poster hanging over my bed. Nothing against it, but it's just not me!

Actually that was my first half-reaction to the picture, that it was of God or Jesus raising a woman, but then I noticed how he was decorated.

Umm. . . I don't know a heckuva lot about egypt, but I used to love ancient mythology when I was little.
Firstly, the main character is a guy (so no "goddess"), and secondly I'm pretty sure that's a Pharaoh and his family worshiping Aten ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aten ) the sun god.Nov 14, 2009 18:56 by philos-phobos. -

@passepartout: His hips would suggest that... but wasn't one of the things about art in his time that it didn't apply the strict rules about body proportions, including smaller women? I'm thinking of that famous (infamous?) relief of him and his wife in which they're kissing their babies. Then again... this probably wasn't crafted during his time, eh?

@merendis: his heresy was his challenge to the official religion and the ultimate power of the theocracy. He shelved the priests (temporarily) and tried to establish a religion around a single god, Ra. Ra is in the papyrus, above, as the red orb with rays of love hitting Ahkenaten.
Ahkenaten deliberately exaggerated his physique in his commissioned portraits. I did see a 'normal' papyrus of him and his family. They had normal proportions.

This is a small prayer bell from Wat Doi Suthep in Thailand. I have several of different size around garden, hanging from the trees. They are cast bronze and each has a single, clear note.
A Buddhist monk tried to explain them to me. Through pantomime I guessed something about a prayer when the wind stirs the bell's clapper. All about the glittery temple were many sizes of bells, mostly hung by people, each bell with a private prayer. I asked a Thai man to write the names of some friends and my family on them. The writing has faded, but the bells still sing their prayers all the same.
Here's a link to Wat Doi Suthep if you want to learn more about it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wat_Phrathat_Doi_Suthep)

My cat also likes to admire interesting things on the wall. These are woodcuts that I did over the course of many years at a friend's annual get-together. Artistic types would gather at his farm every summer for a day of making art using the farm and surrounding land as inspiration. Woodcuts are the only art I make by hand because the medium is crude enough to forgive my inadequacies of talent. Sometimes the results are quite charming. I have not gotten around to framing all of them.

We've got a ton of crazy crap on our walls but this one has a story to it I think you artists will like. When I was 22ish my friend picked me up from school (friend is an understatement, he was my bff and also a Columbian guy I married so he could stay in the country) and he said, I have to go to New York, do you want to come? I said ok. We went for the weekend and spent it with some of his friends who were professional artists and actors. One girl had just sold one of her paintings to a law firm for $20,000. The other girl, the painters sister, was moving back to Columbia to be on a soap opera. Her boyfriend was an actor and had just received a $230 check from Disney for being an extra on a show - he was like 35. Everyone else was in their late 20s. We were all out to brunch and the guy kept talking about his check and stuff. So we got into this conversation about art and money. The guy was saying if you become very independently wealthy you have "sold out". He said something like this, "Only bad artists surround themselves with things, like swimming pools and tennis courts, you need to minimalize to be a good artist." And the girl who had just sold the 20k painting said, "How are you a bad artist if you have a swimming pool?" I wrote it down on a napkin then later wrote it larger and hung it up where I am working as motivation.

@rabbitdan: they'd rub ink on one side of the fish and lay it on a piece of paper. Kind of like early printmaking. They used it to create a record of the size and species of fish, but nowadays its use is more artistic. Young kids in Japan do art projects with rubber fish, I hear.
