Photograph a local public sculpture

I was thinking we don't have any public sculpture in this town and was considering to put up a photo of the sculpture in our our pond, but then realized that's not exactly 'public.' But when I was looking at other people's pictures, I remembered I took this photo at the town's graveyard quite some time ago (I think it was a school project?). So here you go!

Enjoyed the blog post! Got me to thinking about the quantity and variety of sculpture I could capture in 4 hours. I thought there might be a web site devoted to local sculpture & found a Los Angeles group called Save Outdoor Sculptures! (SOS!). They have an interesting web listing with lots of links to the actual sculptures: http://www.publicartinla.com/sculptures/sos_laartists_a-c.html

This task came too early ... This is a miniature version of 2 sculptures being built here and will stand 114 feet tall.
Although sculptures, they will both move and lift boats from one canal to another... should be really cool.
They are Kelpies, which are supernatural water horses from Celtic folklore that are believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland.Nov 23, 2009 16:01 by demander-

Yep, you are right. The one of thedigitalghost features the same illusion. This bronze is quite new - I must admit - but not younger than 40 years old. Can't tell if it is a quote from a particular painting but has a vague neoclassic-preromantic aura that gives it a certificate of out-of-time and a scent of baroque ashtray-ty.

This bronze statue is part of a composition in Piazza del Popolo in Vittorio Veneto (Italy). This town has been honored with the Golden Medal for Military Honor, having been the stage of tragic battles during XIX century and during World War I and II, where people and soldiers fought alongside against the invaders.
This statue is by Augusto Murer. The whole monument is dedicated to all the fallen of the Risorgimento, of the Great War and of the Resistance against Nazi-Fascism.

Also in Gaviidae Common, these soft sculpture holiday decorations. For some reason, this scene has captured my fancy this year. I never noticed how parklike the skyway level is when I'm walking on it, but when I get two storeys above I'm charmed. This photo probably doesn't really convey that. Oh well.

There's no public art as such in Brockley. I went out to create something but was quietly moved when I found this. It does many of the things public art should do, in my opinion. It tells a story that in turn raises questions about the social (and other) causes of these flowers being there. This effect is created by a simple act of contextualisation. Quite apart from any pompous theorising I may come out with it reminds me of mortality. I spent a quiet moment looking at this before photographing it.

@athanie: @a_noob: I like the sense of the public taking control of a public space. Not graffiti so much, more when it's expediting a shared need, such as the expression of grief. It's as if there are established patterns which are being broken by something more urgent.
I hope we don't get many more art related tweaks or I'm going to end up sounding like some total art wonk. Which I am anyway really.Nov 23, 2009 14:20 by rabbitdan.

Crappy picture but it was the best I could do right now. Meet Harvey W. Scott whose statue is at the top of Mt. Tabor in Portland. He was a writer and journalist, and semi-politician in the Portland area during the 1860s. In looking him up I found out he was a jerk, though, because he used his newspaper to oppose "free high schools, state supported schools of higher education, woman’s suffrage, [and] organized labor." Hm.

The first time I saw this, I thought there had been a horrible accident, however I know better now. This is The Scribble, built as part of the design of the building. The artist commented:
The scribble was developed in 3D as part of an accurate CAD model from a series of repeated fabricated steel units. The sculpture is constructed from 229 separate pieces of steel, of which 131 were assembled on site.
..nice

It looks really cool from further up the hill in the evening when it's all lit up. I'd like it for that reason alone but I also like the contrast of the form with the architecture.

@rabbitdan: it does look good at night - If I had some time I'd take a few long exposure shots of it, maybe later on this week.

I love how it implies movement and conflict- the worried mother hurrying her child (and family), looking back for fear of what comes after, and the child looking back in excitement, unaware of what's going on but caught up in the people around him, perhaps.
Their hands are connected and yet their outward gazes imply a fracture.
very cool

My grandfather & his family had to flee their home during WW2. He was 15. They came to the U.S. and made it their new home- the rest as they say is history. Thank you for sharing this!

our little town is growing and being incorporated into Seattle city limits. We recently got a temporary art space where the town square will eventually be built.
"The Interim Art Space at Burien's Town Square is displaying Burien's first major temporary art piece, "The Passage," a sculpture depicting a mother and child walking together to share and explore life. This artwork was first created by Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito for the 2005 Burning Man Arts Festival. The figures stand a dramatic 30' and 20' tall and are fabricated out of recycled and scrap metal."

@sydtheskeptic: @philos-phobos: it's a Mermaid! The only logical emblem for a city hundreds of kilometers from the sea!

Make something ephemeral. An Andy Goldsworthy knock off would be good.

Alternatively, find a *found* object and claim it as sculpture. Marcel Duchamp once declared that whatever he was holding at ten minutes past two in the afternoon (or whatever time it was) was art. He was like that, though. Poncy get.
