Garbage Chutes! Mostly out of pure laziness. My first idea was an contraption I'd seen in an old victorian here in SF where you could open the front door from the 3rd floor by pulling a lever, but I couldn't find a pic. But hey! This garbage chute is fancy and updated for all our recycling-separation needs!

NYC back in the 70's- lived in an old tenement house, about six stories. The garbage chute scared the livin' crap outta me. There were stories the older Italian ladies told us about dead bodies down there. I imagine it was meant to keep us kids safely away from it but they had no idea the therapy bills it would cost later on down the road. Geesh, them urban legends...

This is the only picture I can find at the moment of the Drive-In movie theater I used to go to. At the time, I worked for United Artists at another theater so when we closed, the only theater open was the Drive in (which only ran late night) so we used to bring a bag of popcorn and head there after working to catch the latest movies. I was friends with one of the managers and even worked there for a bit during it's second to last season! Sadly, there's no more Drive-Ins in the area anymore.
The Westbury Drive-In opened in 1953 and closed in 1998 and had a capacity for 950 cars. It has been replaced by the United Artists Westbury Stadium 12 and a BJ's wholesale club.

These are still used frequently. 5 years ago I opened a new Wal-Mart store and they use pneumatic tubes to transfer money from the registers on 2 floors to the cash office. They're also used in many banks around here with disconnected Drive-up windows.

@nicolebliss: I'd love to put an egg in one, and splat the operator at the other end!

When I managed a venue, I brought up the idea installing these on a weekly basis. It would've been so much easier to send bottles of water to the stage or rolls of ones to the door guy or more TP to the bathrooms.

Wow I can not see how this technology ever worked! It reminds me of the book 1984.
