  I hated it the first couple of weeks--was truly intimidated. I had taken a leave of absence from school (not in NYC) and stayed for less than a year working a couple of internships. When I left, though, I absolutely loved it. I'd consider living there for a couple more years except for the insane living prices. Gosh, it's probably like London! : )

  @athanie: I remember getting off the train from Baltimore and being surprised at how laid back it felt compared to London. After a couple of days it started making me feel weird. I think because I was there by myself and walking around pretty constantly (Carrying heavy cameras the whole time probably didn't help). I'd really like to go back though. There's so much there that i didn't have chance to see. Pretty much all I did was take photos and look at art.

  Wow, you thought that it felt laid back? That's really interesting. NYC was strange to me because I felt like I had a lot of privacy even though I was surrounded by many, many people all day. But I found people were friendlier than what is usually said about New Yorkers. And the museums there are pretty amazing. But they probably doesn't hold a candle to the museums in Europe. Taking photos, looking at art, and walking are the best things to do there. : )

  @athanie: Laid back compared to central London. I found it quite friendly. I found all of America (that I saw) friendly for the most part. I was blown away by the museums in NY. I think sometimes you have to have a pilgrimage to appreciate art. The three days I was there were wonderful for that very reason. I also ate real New York cheesecake, which was one of the highlights of the trip after friends and art. Am thinking about that privacy thing in London now. I live in a fairly quiet area so it's different.

My first trip to the UK in 1998. My parents raised me on steady diet of Winnie-the-Pooh, so my mom was really emotional during our visit to the Hundred Acre Wood, especially when we played Pooh Sticks on the commemorative bridge.

  The first thing I thought, immediately when I saw the picture of you playing Pooh sticks was 'Oh, are they playing Pooh sticks'? And then you were. Hurrah. I played that as a kid. I'd consider forming a televised league but the advertisers would never go for it.

In Mehico !
Walking into the restaurant after my moms wedding.
That's what I miss about mexico. Wherever you go, you're greeted with a nice cold drink. My new favourite is now a singapore sling !

You can't really see the beach in this picture or anything so I'll try to find another one in a minute.

I'm at this strange point where I'm not sure what a "foreign country" or even "foreign currency" is. Is it where I wasn't born, where I don't live, where most of my friends aren't, where I don't feel the strongest connection? I'm currently living in a "foreign country" (and I'm bound to cross the line, beauty walks on a razor's edge...) but I don't want to feel that way about it.
So, I guess a picture of me in the country where I felt most foreign would be most apt. Tiny town called Mersan in Haiti, 2003 I think?

  @rebecaca: I'm afraid this is either a psalm or something from the Book of Common Prayer... I haven't been Episcopalian (Anglican) for a while, but that's who I worked with to translate for this teacher workshop, and would continue to work for if they requested, even if my belief in religion/God is... diminished.
