  It's so great that you posted this. My charge asked me today about bees and stinging. I became an impromptu Pangloss and said that maybe bees sting because we need them so much to pollinate plants, and without that defense we might kill too many for them to be useful to the flora or the world.

I just watched a perfectly awful movie called Follow the River starring that gal who played Laura Palmer on Twin Peaks. It was on Albanian television following George Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck. Sadly I couldn't get a photo because my camera's battery was dead. Nevertheless, foreign TV never ceases to amaze me.

And what's next, you wonder? I unfortunately missed the title, but it stars Linda Hamilton and John Boy from the Waltons and is boring as hell.

I go past Battersea Power Station, art deco ruin every day and it never fails to amaze me -- it is the most strikingly handsome industrial building I've ever seen. The two huge rusting pieces of machinery out front facing the river are like sentinals guarding the site. I'm amazed it's not been redeveloped and torn down, as it's near the centre of the city and a prime riverside area. I wish they'd preserve it with a purpose, but I kind of like it ruined too. It's a very 'London' building and my favourite icon of the city.

  @merendis: the actual area around the power station (Battersea) is somewhat grotty – I would recommend going on one of the tourist river cruises to get a good view! They are indeed touristy, but you will see a great deal and it's a wonderful way to see London. As it was a major port for so long, there's a lot of riverside stuff worth seeing that you can't view so well from land.
