I've found on YouTube a nice couple (she is arabic, her husband italian) who are putting online the lessons of Arabic she gives to him. Besides the fact I think it's a very lovely thing as itself, I started to follow the lessons and I wish to grasp a very basical standard Arabic in one year. So the last bit of culture for me is - I hope - the doorsteps of a whole new culture.

One of the things I look forward to each year is the new DJ Earworm "United States of Pop" mashup video. Get all the best bits of all the best songs of the year, all in one surprisingly well made video. Part of the fun is trying to see how many songs and videos you recognize.

Very famous are Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel and Serge Gainsbourg. The latter has been my favourite for long. There is a single song sung by Gerard Depardieu and composed by Ennio Morricone in the OST of "A Pure Formality" (1994) that I love, and is called Remembering.

"For his installation in The Curve, Boursier-Mougenot creates a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches, furnished with electric guitars and other musical instruments. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live soundscape."
The sounds are a little too random for me but I think the idea's neat.

@athanie: We don't have a name. The Furious Finches could be cool but we're not all finches. I'm in the process of getting Frankenstein's monster on board to play the xylophone and glockenspiel. I hear he's really got that Roy Ayers thing going on. There's a problem with the image rights though : ( Am scouting for a few other members so if you hear of an appropriate bass guitarist do let me know. Hey, maybe Henry Paulson would be good. We don't want Frankie being the only scary member ; )

Experimental noise.
This is a video of my cousin and his culture. He invited me out to an experimental noise show at an abandoned building last night in Cleveland. It's definitely something else, and not made for everyone. Only few can get feeling out of constant noise.

I'm a sucker for noise, so I enjoyed it. I don't listen to that kind of thing too often though. The vocal sample/recording gave it a bit of structure and there were bits in the background that left it vaguely grounded. Hurrah for noise.

Enjoyed it all. Good noise music like this almost make me feel like I was 4 years old and listened to the vacuum cleaner of my mom. After I manage to exit any scheme I feel mentally cozy and start to perceive the movements. Very nice shot by yourself aswell, cheers.

@logosfabula: Yes, you've about summed it up, I think. For some reason the noise frees you up to listen to it as sound, and that's quite liberating. I find myself appreciating visceral noise as an experience in its own right as opposed to being this thing that's part of a broadly historical narrative of music with an underlying careerist agenda. Which is part of how I listen to most music, for better or worse.

thx for posting this... i never really listen to opera but i appreciate the technicality and talent etc... i guess i'm a bit of a slob when it comes to classical/western musical traditions... i like certain 'moments' but have trouble sitting through whole pieces. i suppose this is indicative of the throwaway culture we live in. I'm am on the verge of making an effort to increase my understanding of classical music, i have lots and lots of it but never give it the time it deserves.

I have only ever seen student opera live, and I liked Carmen and hated Woyzek (left after the first act it was so boring). This is very, very different and very, very, very much better than I had expected. Makes me think I should go see a professional opera. I probably will never listen to it without the visuals, but with the staging and actual acting (I had never before seen an opera singer act- they always just stood were they were blocked and sang loud), it looks like a pretty good time.

The Sandman story is so intense and deep that sometimes I have shivers just by recalling the names of the series "Preludes and Nocturnes", " A Game of You", " Season of Mists"... shivers.
