I'm in the middle of three books.
#1: The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein - Very interesting. I had forgotten what a good journalist she is. I've only really just started it but she's already developing her point in an absorbing, well constructed manner. More importantly, she seems to care about people. The book is about the way laissez-faire capitalists have used a public's disoriented state to further their own ends after disastrous events.
#2: The Stuff Of Thought by Steven Pinker - Fascinating but hard work. Gets easier the more you get in to it though. It's about the relationship between language and thought.
#3: The Book of Exodus in the Bible - Awesome and terrifying in equal measure.Feb 08, 2010 13:57 by rabbitdan-

@sydtheskeptic: It's mind boggling, crammed with thoughts and stuff and I'm so going to have to read it again before I can begin to grasp it properly. A good example is the opening debate about whether 9/11 was one event (one plot) or two events (two planes, two buildings). It's the 3.5 billion dollar question, insurance wise.

This mission came just too late to list Under the Dome (guess who gave me that one :)) as the book I am reading. I just finished it Saturday night (well, Sunday morning, actually). I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. (not too sure about the end, but overall very powerful to me) So I guess my actual current book is Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War. Which I have been "reading" for a while now. I find it hard to get through. Not sure if it is just something about the book or if my taste in books has changed. This may actually turn out to be the first book in quite some time that I don't finish.

@merendis: When I read The Fountainhead, it was entertaining on the surface, but it's a completely different book when you start thinking about the thought processes and politics behind the characters. And she saturates her characters with her politics. Not my cup of tea, at least. Not to say that those things don't ring true for others, though.

@merendis: Hm, I'm not quite sure. I suppose it depends on what you find to be crazy about her. But what makes it excellent to me are the little things about it. Like how no one is allowed to be different, everyone is to be the same. Instead of saying "I" they say "We." And how they have no choice over what they are to become, career-wise (which reminded me of The Giver). I find it to be a very interesting concept.
@rabbitdan: She just has different views that some don't agree with. You know, since being different usually equals to appearing crazy to others. I don't find her to be too mad, her work is quite interesting in my opinion. She is known for developing a philosophy known as Objectivism, and it's quite clear in a couple of her novels. I tend to adapt and fall into an author's thoughts while reading, which may be the cause of my adoration for her. I still have a lot more to read from her to establish a final opinion. I just like to keep an easy-going mindset when diving into a book that was made for thinking.

@pensandpencilsgalore: a. my question seemed a bit... harsh and aggressive, and I didn't intend it to.
b. This may be a case of my having read all the wrong things before reading the actual literature. To be clear, I do disagree with her views as I understand them, but that is not the craziness of which I speak. There are instances I've read about that indicate a craziness that is also consistent with her philosophy. I have read about her support of a murder (who murdered a young girl for ransom money), her forcing her followers to smoke because it represented man's dominion over fire (and lung cancer links were communist propaganda), her subjecting followers who questioned her to show trials in front of the group.
It's these sort of things, and not the philosophy that make me wonder if I'd be able to read it objectively... My knowing that I disagree would make it even more difficult, but I think one day I may just have to suck it up, try to put that aside, and read this, as so many people clearly find it to be good literature.Feb 09, 2010 01:36 by merendis.

I find it hard to give a good translation of the title. Any Dutch ppl wanna help? The closest translation would be "They seem to be people as well", but it doesn't cover the real meaning behind it.
It's written by a journalist who lived in the middle east as expat. It's a "behind the scenes" book and he gives many examples how we are manipulated by the media. It is very interesting! Unfortunately, there's no English translation.

Now I'm curious....why has ketchup only one major brand?
Feb 08, 2010 09:08 by x-u. -
This comment has been flagged by users. Click to view.
@x-u: it's all about the taste. mustard, for example, has many different types, brands and tastes and people are okay with that, but ketchup (heinz) has the perfect mix of sweet, salt and spices. People (Americans at least) expect their ketchup to taste a certain way and don't like to stray from perfection. There are other brands (like Hunt's), but they don't have that perfect combo of taste. You can read about it online ... http://www.gladwell.com/2004/2004_09_06_a_ketchup.html. The book's essays come from The New Yorker.

I don't understand mathematics, but I like the concept (yeah, I'm weird) and I take an interest in cryptography. Reading Cryptonomicon was a good experiences. Not too confusing, either.

math and homicide, what a rousing combination! though the size of the book looks like I could use it as a very uncomfortable pillow. not sure how I feel about that, lol.
