I want to see the movie but haven't yet. The trailer has that Arcade Fire song (which is well documented in its ability to make grownups cry like babies).

I have to say, I really wanted to love the movie, but it wasn't nearly as good as I had hoped. The kid is a brat, and it's hard to empathize with him. There are also some RANDOM extra characters (these two weird owls who have nothing to do with the plot). I'd give it only 2 stars.

I'm trying to remember that far back … When I was in the middle years of gradeschool, I know I plowed through all of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books in these yellow editions (I think it was blue for the Boys).

So many to choose from! All the Ramona quimby books, encyclopedia brown series, Laura ingalls wilder books, but I think my favorite of all was one I can't remember the name of :(. It was about a lion living in a zoo in France. My "uncle" Jack gave it to me (my great-grandmother's older brother). I'm going to have to find that again.

A series of Dutch books about a smart little boy ("Slimmetje" or "Smartie" I guess), with a magical hat. I think the hat was like a portal to a fantastic world, or weird creatures would come from it. (It's been a while.) It took quite some digging in my memory and online to figure out what this series was called, I don't have access to my books right now.

I love the bit about the bird. My grandfather had parakeets periodically throughout my childhood and he taught them all curse words in Italian. My dad also had a macaw for a time, and his previous owner had taught him how to say, "baaad boy." He even drew out the word bad really long. It was sort of eerie.

I loved this book when I was little so much, I still take it out and read it sometimes. It's very zen. This photo is the only one I could find- it's a "vintage book cover" that has been repurposed into a binder to make a collage/sketchbook something or other for sale on Etsy. I think it's a terrible waste of a good book, but at least I still have my copy around here somewhere.

That was my thought as well. I can hardly remember any titles. A few series, but that is it. Sad, considering that I used to take out the maximum number of library books allowed (3-4 at a time) and then went back asap to return the ones I read and get new ones. I think I was there at least once or twice a week.
