I’d say “become fluent in Japanese and Spanish,” but I’m actually learning those two languages so I guess they don’t really count any more. There are a few more languages I want to learn, but I also want to learn how to properly play the guitar. I actually have a guitar and can play some random melodies and solos on it, but I don’t get much further than that…

Now that I have kids I want to get on the ball and learn more than the basics, so when we visit my husbands family (most of which live in Taiwan) they will be comfortable communicating. I sewed a lot before grad school (and a little bit after), and I love it almost as much as I love knitting. You can get some pretty good books that will get you started so you don't have to invest in a class immediately, and use your manual! Every machine threads differently and I have almost broken mine several times when I forgot a step after months/years of not using it. Making a pillow is a good first project.
Also, @stephie hemming is better done by hand than with a machine. The machine stitches are generally too tight to get a clean, straight edge unless you are really good at adjusting the stitch tension. Machine hemming is more common with heavier fabrics like denim.

@nonlinear_time: maybe "hemming" isnt the right term... like if I want to shorten a too-long shirt for example.... I couldnt do that by hand, it would look terrible. (or making curtains or similar ventures). I wonder if the machine I have still has it's manual...would be worth checking. I like the idea of making a pillow as a first project, I have plenty of scrap fabric (old pillow cases, shirts, etc) to play around with should I dare to ever bring this thing out of hiding.

I bought a machine a few years ago, left it in the box untouched for 2 years and then finally sat down and taught myself to use it. I've made a few dresses for my girls, but it's a cheap machine and the thread is forever getting knotted so it's very frustrating. Someday I'll upgrade.

my sister is about to turn 30 and still doesn't drive. She took lessons twice, but every time she got behind the wheel and saw cars coming the opposite direction she'd have a panic attack. She also recently found out she's one of the 5% of people with absolutely no depth perception, so she's decided to stick with public transportation forever

I'd like to learn to speak and understand Dutch. I know lots of Dutch words and I can say a few correct phrases and (with the many known words) put together a really terrible phrase that someone Dutch would understand but cringe hearing. So it would be nice to know what's what the proper way. I have 2 programs, a couple CD's, some grammar books. All I need is the patience and the time. Where are you patience and time??
