"We were not having any fun, he had recently begun pointing out. I would take exception (didn't we do this, didn't we do that) but I had also known what he meant. He meant doing things not because we were expected to do them or had always done them or should do them but because we wanted to do them. He meant wanting. He meant living."

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'. - Kurt Vonnegut in Timequake.

"Ever drifting down the stream
Lingering in golden gleam
Life, what is it but a dream?" – Lewis Carroll
I've put my favorite up in another mission, but also really love this.

"And after doing everything what they do, they get up, bathe, use talc, are perfumed, comb themselves, dress, and this way progressively they are returning to be what they are not."Jan 31, 2011 20:11 by fercas_123 -

May I never be complete. May I never be content. May I never be perfect. Deliver me, Tyler, from being perfect and complete. ~Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club
The movie is actually one of my favorites, but the book really nails it on the head as well.

Whence and what art thou, execrable shape,
That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance
Thy miscreated Front athwart my way
To yonder Gates? through them I mean to pass,
That be assured, without leave askt of thee:
Retire, or taste thy folly, and learn by proof,
Hell-born, not to contend with Spirits of Heav'n.-- Satan, Paradise Lost by John Milton (book 2)

"Unconditional love. That's what this is. I love him, as is, fully. I've had to stop arm wrestling with the facts. Why me? Didn't I already have a big love once? And lost it? So why should I get it again? I've had to stop trying to look for cracks and flaws to prove that it's not as good as it seems. Because it's as good as it seems. Even when we fight, we fight inside the container of good.
Somehow, through a flip of the coin, I ended up here. Feeling like somebody at the top of the heart-lung transplant recipient list. Damaged but invigorated and fucking lucky."

From The 25th Hour, by David Benioff.
Not a quote I know by heart, but I know it is in the book. As is 1.5 pages of a "f*ck ..." dialogue, both of which are very strongly delivered in the movie. (Saw the movie first, then read the book, movie is a close adaptation so this is kind of like a good movie quote as well.)Jan 31, 2011 11:06 by chaomancer -

It's not from my favorite book but I am sure I have posted a quote from there before.
"Why do you go away? So that you can come back.
So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors.
And the people there see you differently, too.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving."Terry Pratchett - A Hat Full of Sky
