I have great memories of the Mother West Wind stories by Thornton W. Burgess. My parents would read them to me and my sisters, and they created a "voice" for each character. I wish there were video cameras back then!

This is my favorite I guess I will tell you about it and why. It is about a "lazy" mouse who is too busy writing and collecting colors to cooperate in the fall harvest with the other mice. When they run out of food, Fredrick tells them poems and so on.

This book really resonated with me as a kid so I bought it recently to read again and to have my 9yo read. As it turns out, I have no idea why I once loved it so much and the 9yo didn't like it at all. Humph.

Ha! That was one of the summer reading books for my 9yo last year (between 2nd and 3rd grade). She loved it.

@zoe There are two other books in the series, The Celery Stalks at Midnight and Howliday Inn. You should grab them for the little princess as they are wonderful.
