@nonlinear_time: They regularly switch stuff out and put new things in, but I'm not sure what they do with the plants they take out. Portland's a pretty green city so I bet someone plants it elsewhere.

There’s prettier trees in Portland but this is probably cooler. This small tree is planted in Mill Ends Park, reputed to be the smallest park in the world. The circle is 2 feet across and once had a swimming pool for butterflies and a miniature Ferris wheel. Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mill_Ends_Park

So, won't the tree take over the whole park in a few years? Or is it a starter park and someone will transplant the tree to a more suitably sized location at a later date?

My friends and I went to a Scandinavian restaurant--got a gravlax sandwich w/ bacon, avocado, and horseradish sauce on a rye-ish bread. Came with some pickled onions/beets and a bowl of tomato soup. Good stuff!

Did she just faint? What a ladies man! Stealing women's hearts in his wake. The 40s were a strange moment in time compared to today--either the guys had irresistible game or the women had more wavering hearts (maybe both?). ; )

I also loved this book. Takes me back to the years when I set about reading every Newberry winning book. Sadly, I didn't make it through the list before I lost interest in children's books and moved over to the sci-fi shelves in the library. Maybe I'll return to that quest one of these days.
