I took a course in high school. Essentially they give you tips on what words to skip and still get the context. Then there's this machine (probably have a computer program to do it now), where it has a box that scrolls across and only lets you read a few words at a time (at a certain rate). This forces you to read faster (sort of like a treadmill for your eyes), and eventually you work your way up. I think the last time I was tested I was reading almost 400WPM.

@toyotaboy: Nice. 400WPM would be a big help with all those boring work papers. I think I saw a site that has some kind of practice software for this, maybe I'll actually find time to check it out some time soon.
