I was once in a meeting with a few people from various companies and while waiting for more to arrive I thought I'd break the ice by asking a guy if he had kids.
When I got no reply I asked again, thinking he was slightly deaf.
"Tim, have you got any kids?"
After the fourth time of me asking REALLY loudly, he said "I had a daughter, but she was murdered a few years ago. Today would have been her 21st birthday."
He then proceeded to get some A4 size photos of her out of his briefcase and showed them to me, fighting back the tears.
The meeting was pretty somber after that.
