Can I ask you guys a question? How come the site allowed that person to post the thing about killing babies? What are the regulations? I'm writing an article about Tweak Today and after seeing that I think I got the mission of the site wrong...

The site has a "flag" option and that item was flagged - but only once so far. This is a community site and there are going to be issues from time to time (of offense, differing viewpoints, copyright etc. ) and usually we give it some time to gauge the community reaction to an item before taking any action - the author could edit the submission or other TT users can flag it. I'm very sorry if that post caused you offense.

What do other people think? What's the correct approach to moderation in your opinion here?

I think that's just what you get with a user-content driven site, and I don't think it's a reflection on the site's mission by any stretch of the imagination.

Usually the missions and the tone are very positive. But not always. Today is a bit of a counterexample.

@finalarena: oops I replied under my bfs acct. Yeah, the internet is the internet, I don't care if he doesn't like Planned Parenthood, I just thought the "They Kill Babies!" a little too much. I suppose the Catholic one could also cause the same offense. I just thought this site was a little more civilized and aware of other people than most stuff out there. Does that make sense? Again, I'm new and am learning how it works. I do love this site! It's one of the coolest things I've found in a while. Is this bad that I interupted the thread with a Q? I tried to write to the admin, but the email didn't get through. Are you the admin?

@tprjones: Yes I agree. I have a thing where I try not to use the word hate. Negativity usually produces more negativity. Perhaps this is an example?

@discomeg2: Yes I am the admin - hello. I've found the community here to be amazing, intelligent and extremely civilized - and positive. I'd like to think the post in question did not set out to ostensibly offend and my first instinct is to give the benefit of doubt. Also pre-moderation and active moderation is a grey legal area for a website owner so I have to rely on content being flagged (unless I can see it is illegal etc).
"Is this bad that I interrupted the thread with a Q" - I don't think anyone minds (its an interesting debate) - but feel free to "delete" if you like (the thread will be archived). You should be able to email admin at admin@tweaktoday.com if you want to contact me.
Please note that, if the submission in question was moderated then this thread would have to be removed also.

@finalarena: I probably will. I tried to email the admin before posting this. But the email bounced back. If you are willing, would you want to answer some Qs for my article? It's for Web Designer Depot, a pretty happenin' site for web deisgners, obviously. My email can be found on my website - www.meghanchiampa.com Thank you for your feedback!

@discomeg2: This is sad in several ways. I'm really sad you're hurt for starters. I'm glad people have pretty straightly said what they think about that post in the comments though. That seems like a good way of addressing it. Funnily enough, I've been trying (sometimes failing) to restrain myself from ranting negatively all day. But that, mon amis, is a whole other story.

@rabbitdan: no i know what you mean, as I said it seems like a positive site and it wouldn't make sense to start a bantering argument over ethics or whatever. The feedback on the post seemed informative and hopefully they helped in some way. I'm not hurt, more like, WTF'd.

@discomeg2: I can't get on board with some sort of "positivity is the only way to go!" attitude, and I don't think the offending submission was inevitable. But it happens, and I think we're pretty self-regulating in these rare situations. Perhaps as we get bigger it's something to watch more closely.

@discomeg2: okay.
ps - I read Web Designer Depot sometimes. I'll look out for the article :)

I think we could make a VERY basic forum for random questions like that. I'd even pitch and make it.

Though the Planned Parenthood thing surprised me, isn't this kind of an opinion thing? We were asked what brand we hate, and why...though I don't really think of Planned Parenthood as a brand, but opinion is opinion whether we agree or not.

@merendis: haha. I'm not that cheery. It's just the word "hate" I think. Something my mother probably told me when I was a kid. I found this site through Stumble Upon and notice it is really young. I have a feeling it will get bigger. It is a good community I think , not that I "know" you guys at all, it's just curious to see how these thing evolve and what steps site admins take to keep them headed in a certain direction.
You should read this article: http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2009/10/11/enough_with_the_bright_side/ It's an interview about "staying positive" with that lady who wrote Nickled and Dimed. It's a weird article, but smart.

@discomeg: I'm impressed with how everybody kinda rallied around that post tho, like @rabbitdan said. Please let us know when the article is done after you write it for Web Designer Depot. I'd be interested to read it.
I certainly don't see this as a "negative" site though, and it's certainly not the mission of the site. There's all sorts of people on here and I imagine I've offended someone somewhere.
Oh, and I love Barbara Ehrenreich.

@athanie: Article is in the works, this site inspired the topic, this one and Drawer Geeks, if you know that. I wrote to the person who interviewed Ehrenreich asking her what did she think of Ehrenreichs responses and she wrote the following: Hi Meghan,
I'm glad to hear you found the interview thought-provoking. Her book had a
similar effect on me, as far as thinking about it after the fact.
She definitely advocates for realism, not pessimism -- I specifically asked
her about that, because it seemed so perverse to be encouraging the latter.
She seems to feel that you should know what forces are against you, instead
of being in denial, and that way you can be prepared for anything.
Thanks so much for writing. It's great to know that people are reading the
Globe.
All best,
Jenna

@discomeg2: hee hee, fair enough- we had a rule about the word "bored"... It's really an incredible community, welcome to it!
I was just thinking... that planned parenthood post was extra weird because the information you glean from people on this site is generally very basic (family situation, work, location) and completely esoteric (what sort of haircut your mom forced on you when you were ten, your obsession with the colour green), but not as much as the stuff in between, such as views like this. That may have been what felt so out of place about that post for me.

@tprjones: sorry if my mission is negative. I didn't intend to foment any disrespect. I just wanted to see what popular brands or products people generally disliked. I don't think of Planned Parenthood as a brand. But hey, at least it got a conversation going...

@lewisfilms: its a fun mission, not a negative one.
@discomeg2: it is lamentable that someone has been insulted, and i'm sorry that you were, but there is always a possibility of offense in open forum style interaction and i feel that taking steps to eliminate it could be foolish as freedom of speech is eroded when posts are deleted before being read and judged by the community.
i am new to tweaktoday and the response to this post has made me understand just how special this community is.
there are other posts which could also be flagged and possibly deemed insulting due to imagery or language used but because they contained humor no one seems bothered by them.
a mission statement and clear rules about the expected content of posts could be useful and forums would be amazing.

@lewisfilms: I'm sorry, I didn't mean it in an accusatory way. I think it's a good mission. Life would be boring if everything were puppies an rainbows all the time. :)
