can you recommend any resources? i'm not sure about specific breed just yet... and i always here pure bred = health problems. i'm just looking to see where i can look... still kinda preliminary. thanks!

Yes! I'm going to write a short novel. I'm always pro-rescue dog, but there's still a gamble. Any dog can have health issues (case in point my rescued puppy who's ALWAYS sick). HOWEVER if you go to a reputable breeder they should have done health screenings on the parent dogs before breeding them and should give you a written health guarantee for your puppy. Most responsible breeders (re: responsible) will replace/refund the puppy if they die or become seriously ill with in the first two years of life, as well as offer life-long support of you as a pet owner. The problem is with backyard breeders who don’t know what they’re doing and sell sick dogs, don’t mix up the gene pool, etc. The only breed-specific local rescue I’m familiar with is NorCal Boxer Rescue (because that’s my favorite breed). Their website is http://ncbr.org/ca/. You can also look on www.petfinder.com for lots of good rescue dogs (You can search by breed). Or the AKC lists breed specific rescues. That way if you have a dog breed you’re interested in, you can still get a rescue. http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm
