I judge the casinos by how much I like the sports books- I don't really like gambling so I hang out and watch horse racing. My favorite is the mirage. I also like the palms and the tropicana but that is more for their old school qualities.

The qwerty keyboard organization was designed for typewriters with moving levers for each letter. Someone figured out that the arrangement reduced the likelihood that the levers would jam when people were typing fast. It has to do with how often some letters occur near each other in English.

For evolutionary science, give Jared Diamond or, even better, Steven Jay Gould a try. For books that take place in another time, I might suggest "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell" by Susanna Clarke. It is fantasy, but it reads like a 19th century novel to me. I also love Charles Dickens and Nathaniel Hawthorne for historical fiction. When I think about coming of age stories, so many of them revolve around men it is annoying. In that vein, though, I would suggest the four Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin- Tehanu, the last one, was one of my favorite books of all time, but it isn't as poignant if you haven't read the others. They're a quick read, though. Oh, and if you have never read the Iliad and and Odyssey, you really should, but be sure to get Stanley Lombardo's translations- they capture the raw quality of the ancient Greek so much better than translations that focus more strictly on matching meter and grammatical structures.

I think the intentionality of lying is what the story is about, so I'd think that it would grow if he intended to deceive whoever he was talking to, but it wouldn't if he didn't because he would just be stating something false... I think.

Well, I have written over 100 pages of one novel and about 65 of a second, but since I do it in my spare time, it goes really, really slowly. One is fantasy and the other in sci fi. Those are the genres I read and enjoy the most, so they're the ones I think in creatively.

As someone who has to deal with pseudoscience and pseudohistory regularly, I have to comment. The "lies" you speak of are probably scientific statements misunderstood or taken out of context. It is easy read into some jargon-y statements that scientists put out there because they use words that seem ordinary but actually mean specific things in the idiom of the discipline. I once heard a prominent archaeologist tell a story about a reporter taking a statement he made out of context to make it sound like he believed that Atlantis was in Bolivia. As a scientist, when you do know so much about such a complex discipline, it can be hard to remember what the average person knows and doesn't know about your topic because it has all become second nature. That makes it really hard to communicate with the media who then sensationalize your information into stories that are patently untrue. Don't worry. The Mayans never, ever said something catastrophic was going to happen in 2012. It is just the year that their long count calendar turns over. It's like New Years, but on a 25,000 year long scale.

Do you enjoy writing novels? Parallel careers are good because you have more than one leg to stand on. I'd say go for it. Will give me something to read too. : )

As a former salesperson (and the wife of a former salesperson) if you look pissed off when you come up, there is no incentive to be nice; you are just another angry person trying to take out their anger at something in their own life on some anonymous person who happens to work in a shop you are buying something at. You would be surprised at how many people carry their anger around with them and have no way to express it to people in their families and workplaces, so they lash out at poor salespeople.

I had a somewhat similar experience with tattoo artist improvisation. The vague reddish tint around my lotus flower was a surprising addition that I don't really like. I intend to get some water and fish around that one sometime soon to cover it up.

This one (it's upside down) is the ideogram for the crocus flower in Linear B, a dead writing system for the dead dialect of Mycenaean Greek (ca. 1200 BCE- I'm writing about those folks in my dissertation). It's super nerdy.

I hope I'm not breaking a cardinal rule of tweaktoday, but I am going to post twice today because I'm proud of both of my tattoos and, try as I might, I can't get them into one picture. You might say, "just photoshop the two images together!" Unfortunately, I am such a photoshop noob, that while I can get the two pictures to show up together, I can't figure out how to save them so they aren't so tiny when I upload them that you can't see the tattoos.
