Why can't I just write up my cover letter and submit my resume? It seems so easy but I can't do it. I really don't know why.

fear of rejection? I'm in the process but for schools and I hate it to. I get anxious and dizzy and nauseous during every step. You need someone pestering you to do it. If you can't internally motive yourself, get some external motivation.

@merendis: This is horrible. I nearly didn't apply for my MA because I thought the course wouldn't want to know. They definitely wanted to know and I got a distinction.
In absolutely every situation like this you get into it and find the person at the other end of the line is just another fundamentally vulnerable human. My colleagues and course mates have generally been just as schmucky as I believed yourself to be. In fact, my expectations of myself have often given me a headstart on them.
It would be a terrible, terrible shame for either of you to do nothing because you were scared of filling out a form and the imagined chimera reading the form.
They key thing is to get someone to look at it and pick at it before hand.
@peterpan - I don't know you so can't comment on your abilities. I am sure you are just as or more capable than plenty of people applying for anything you are.
@merendis - You're very very intelligent and would be a great asset to the huge majority of MAs in your area of interest. Besides, I want you to do an MA so I can regularly quiz you about what you're reading.
Finally, for goodness' sake, are you really going to let this inertia keep you stuck forever?
Right. Enough.

@merendis: Oh, sorry, I meant "I believed myself to be" I rewrote that bit and forgot to change that word.

@rabbitdan: I do understand what I ought to feel about myself, and why I ought not be scared etc. Doesn't really change my ability to motivate myself. This is why I stress external motivation. No man is an island so if you've having trouble, archipelago yourself up. There's no reason to assume humans are meant to get through this stuff alone. Get someone to be, or at least pretend to be, just as interested in your success so they can pressure you. Parents, friends, significant others, strangers in a cafe who can tell when you're on facebook and you just know they're shaming you, they're all great.

Because you feel overwhelmed and do not know where to begin. Seeming simple does not mean it is simple.
Seeking out help from someone could help.

For me what helped was just plunging into the water, so to speak. I started the job search/application process by writing extremely personalized CVs and cover letters and spending a large amount of energy and time applying to these positions. Never got a response from them. Broaden your search and put your resume out there. Write your resume so that you can point to your strengths, but be honest, keep it to one page even if you leave some out.

@merendis: Right. I'm taking that as encouragement to pester you.

@merendis: @peterpan: This ties in to my answer to the list three nevers question posed by @joe_dude, which was never say never. The concept of "it doesn't hurt to ask" was firmly instilled in me by my parents. Sure, the answer might be no, but the answer might be yes and if you don't ask in the first place you'll never know. This can easily be applied to the applications the two of you are fretting over. It's difficult to put yourself out there and face the possibility of being turned, but if you don't put yourself out there you have zero chance of being accepted.

Thanks ya'll for the response. I guess I've just been really afraid of being rejected for the job again. I've had a couple of interviews already. But I shouldn't stop.
GO GO GO!
